Substrates and nutrients: build a routine before buying the bottles

P
Popeye's Passion

Compare growing media, understand pre-fertilisation and plan a manageable nutrient routine with clear product references.

Samples of soil, coco coir and perlite beside nutrient bottles and a seedling

A bag of growing medium and a row of nutrient bottles may look like a complete setup, but the useful question is how they fit together. Start with the substrate already in your pots, the water you use and the time you can spend checking the plants. This gives every new purchase a clear purpose and helps you avoid assembling a collection of products with conflicting instructions.

Identify what is actually in the pot

Read the composition on the bag rather than relying on a familiar colour or product name. A potting mix, a coco-based medium and a blend containing perlite are different starting points. Record the full reference, ingredients and intended use. If plants arrive already potted, ask which medium they contain before buying supplements. Keep a photograph of the original label; it is more useful during a product discussion than describing the contents simply as 'soil'.

Check whether the medium already contains fertiliser

Pre-fertilisation is a product detail to check before choosing a nutrient programme. Biobizz describes Light·Mix as lightly fertilised; that does not make every product with 'mix' in its name equivalent. Look for the corresponding manufacturer's instructions and the exact medium named in them. A schedule for one substrate should not silently become the schedule for another. Record what is included in the medium and which additional product has a documented role in your setup.

Read drainage information in context

Premier Tech describes PRO-MIX HP as a peat-based medium with a high proportion of perlite, designed for high air porosity and good drainage. Use that information to compare products, not to assume that every bag needs the same watering routine. Note the pot type, drainage openings and how the medium behaves in your own environment. A written record of watering and observations makes later changes easier to discuss than changing the medium and several products at once.

Give each nutrient product a job

Separate the main fertiliser from supplements and products sold for a particular stage or purpose. For each bottle, write down the manufacturer's intended use, the substrate named in the instructions and whether it is designed to work with the range you already own. Buy the missing role rather than a second product with a similar description. Do not turn a list of attractive labels into an improvised mixing recipe: keep the combination and the instructions traceable.

Plan quantities with a simple example

If you plan to fill five pots with 9 litres of medium each, the starting calculation is 5 × 9 = 45 litres. The amount actually used depends on the fill level and any existing root balls, so check those before choosing a bag size. Apply the same planning to bottles: compare the package size, the documented use and storage space, rather than buying the largest container by default. Keep opened products in their original labelled packaging and follow the storage instructions.

Keep a small, useful record

A notebook can be simple: date, medium reference, exact product used, the instruction followed and your observations. Make one considered change at a time so that the next observation has a clear context. When something seems wrong, bring the labels and the record to a discussion rather than adding another bottle immediately. For pH or EC questions, include your meter reference and the water source; numbers are much easier to interpret when the measurement and the products are identified.

Choose a routine you can maintain

The best shortlist fits both your plants and your available time. Before ordering, gather the medium's technical sheet and the instructions for the proposed nutrient range. Check that the products, package sizes and handling requirements make sense together. Browse substrates and nutrients as separate decisions, then confirm the combination using those documents. Our team can help compare the catalogue references when you bring the names of your existing products and photographs of their labels.
